Argentina detects 5 cases of Mpox including one infection that has been
identified as belonging to Clade 1
Of the five cases, four were men and one was a woman and the clade I strain was identified in a male who has no previous travel history to Africa and is residing in province of corrientes. This discovery is sparking alarms among health authorities and doctors as it means that there could be local community spread of the Clade I Mpox strain taking place in the province.
Argentinian health authorities have not confirmed if the other 4 individuals are infected with the clade II Mpox strain instead of the more worrisome clade I strain. Accordingly, laboratory test and sequencing are currently underway and the results should be known in the next few hours.
All five have been isolated in two separate hospitals.
Argentina has been having a number of Mpox infections so far this year but all were strains belonging to Clade II.
Readers should be not be alarmed about reported cases of Clade II Mpox infections as these strains have been in circulation globally for a while now since 2022 and are predominant among the gay communities and sex workers.
However, what is more concerning at the moment is the spread of the Clade I Mpox strain that is more lethal and is also enhanced for airborne transmissions.
Mpox News reports are also emerging about a potentially newer mutated strain of Clade I Mpox being found in Peru but details of this news cannot be validated as of publication time of this article and we will be providing more updates if these speculations are true or are fake.
