COVID-19 Disinfectants: A Singaporean science journalist based in Massachusetts, XiaoZhi Lim recently raised concerns about the usage of disinfectants that contain “quats”-quaternary ammonium compounds which has been found to be toxic and has so far proven to cause developmental and fertility problems in mice and also disrupt various cellular pathways with serious implications for human health. Further subsequent studies after the report also showed the toxicity and potential dangers these disinfectants have to human health.
These quaternary ammonium compounds can be found in many disinfecting sprays, wipes, soaps, and hand sanitizers, and have been widely used for decades and now are widely used by consumers, hospital workers, janitors, and public transit workers to reduce the risk of catching SARS-CoV-2.
Ms XiaoZhi Lim fortunately raised authorities and various regulatory bodies’ attention after publishing a report in the Chemical and Engineering News publication.

The news has now caused the California Department of Public Health to declare publicly, “We proactively recommend the use of disinfectants that do not contain (quats) or other harmful chemicals, whenever possible.”
It is also reported that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is set to release updated risk assessments for quats shortly, and at least one study has measured quat levels in samples of human blood and analyzed them for markers of cellular dysfunction and inflammation. The WHO and US FDA are also expected to make public announcements about this soon.
QUAT based products are being extensively made by many European companies who are shipping tons of it to Asia Pacific countries including countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand where it is being used extensively. With the publication of the article and EU regulatory bodies expected to react soon, many of these European companies are trying to dump stocks into Asia. However in countries like Thailand, consumer advocate groups are already sending petitions to the various regulatory bodies to get these products banned and to impose criminal laws against companies selling or promoting its use or using it.
An early study published in Nature journal highlighted the dangers of Quat disinfectants when it was observed that mice models in a lab where the disinfectants were being used and the animals were being affected.

A further study by the scientist who discovered the initial negative effects revealed that quats also caused fertility issues in mice models.

Additional studies also showed that it give rise to genetic mutations that gives rise to birth defects in animal models.

Further studies also reflected the fertility issues the disinfectants caused.

Dr Gino Cortopassi, a toxicologist at the University of California, Davis, who had been studying diseases involving the mitochondria, the energy-producing component of cells found that mitochondrial dysfunction causes excess fatigue, and is a feature of aging and most chronic diseases. He published study in which it was found that quaternary ammonium compounds found in disinfectants caused mitochondrial defects.

Another study by University of Washington found that these disinfectants could cause neurological impairment as it affects cholesterol biosynthesis.

A new study published on a preprint server and is currently pending per-review shows how these disinfectants are toxic to humans being exposed to an environment that had been previously disinfected with quaternary ammonium compounds.

As more alarming studies are emerging about the use of these quat disinfectants to fight COVID-19, the public is advised to avoid using such disinfectants and also to avoid disinfecting companies that use these chemicals as studies are showing it is hazardous to human health.
Bans of these chemicals are expected shortly and also a flood of class action lawsuits are also expected in the near future.
