COVID-19 News: The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) finally confessed on Monday to local media on that the worrisome JN.1 spawn called JN.11 that Thailand
Medical News had warned about since a month ago had actually grown in numbers and that over 244 sequences of the variant had been detected in infected individuals in India to date!

244 Cases Of JN.1.11 Detected In india So Far
It is coming to light that Indian authorities have not been uploading all genomic sequences on the global sharing platform GISAID as there are not that many JN.1.11 sequences found there originating from India.
In fact, it is common knowledge that India just like many other countries, is not forthcoming with the true COVID-19 data on infections, hospitalizations and deaths.
And even when it comes to genomic surveillance and data on GISAID and on platform like COV-spectrum etc..none of the data is reliable these days as many countries are withholding data.
On the CoV-Spectrum for instance..only 26 sequences were reported for India while another 33 have been found in countries like Canada, Singapore, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and Israel. The United States is in second in place with 20 sequences detected. (Actual figures could be much more.)

Thailand
Medical News had been warning about the debut of this worrisome JN.1 sub-linage called JN.1.11 since 5
th of January 2024.

The JN.1.11 sub-lineage contained multiple mutations that are concerned with immune evasion including the spike mutations L455S, F456L, V1104L and the NSP3 mutations T1465I G17334T
The new sub-lineages also contained the Orf1a:T2283I mutation and also the mutations C7113T,T22928C,T3565C.
Importantly, among one
of the mutations found on it is the V1104L mutation which was also found on many Delta sub-lineages.

Past research that have been published in peer reviewed journals show the V1104L residue falls within a T cell epitope and may increase protein stability.

There are evidence to believe that this mutation also allows the new JN.1.11 variant to fight against all kinds of T cell immunity!

Some of the mutations found on the ORF1a and NSP3 of this new JN.1.11 are believed to be involved in inciting cytokine storms and possibly causing damage to the lung tissues. (Studies are currently underway to ascertain this.)
The fact that 244 of such sequences and all from hospitalized patients indicates that a silent spread of severe COVID-19 infections is taking place in India and rest assured those numbers will increase greatly in coming weeks!
Already smaller
COVID-19 News outlets in rural parts of India and social media post are showing the rise of mysterious severe pneumonia outbreaks in various geolocations that is causing many to be hospitalized and also die from the condition. It is likely that these are actually JN.1.11 infections!
INSACOG also divulged that there was a total of 2,083 sequences of JN.1 and its various sub-lineages found in the country so far. Besides the JN.1.11 variant, there were 814 SARS-CoV-2 sequences of JN.1 across 18 states and UTs (Union territories) while its sub-lineage JN.1.1 has been detected in 943 cases.
Last month, the INSACOG Centre asked the states and Union Territories (UTs) to maintain a constant vigil amid the detection of new variants in the country.
The JN.11 variant is of a concern as it has a vast number of mutations on it with some showing a high possibility of not only greater immune evasion potential and enhanced transmissibility but also increase pathogenic and virulent capabilities.

This new JN.1.11 variant is also spreading fast globally especially in countries with high Indian tourist arrivals.
The JN.1.11 variant is among the many worrisome spawns that JN.1 is spewing. Other include the JN.1.2, JN.1.4, the JN.2.5 variant is is wreaking havoc in Brazil currently, the JN.1.6.1, JN.2.3, JN.8. JN.9 an dJN.10 among many others.
