Health authorities in Germany today advised against the use of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine for people under 30 due to evidence of a small risk of cardiac inflammation.
The German Standing Committee On Vaccination or STIKO cited studies showing that mRNA jabs led in rare cases to the conditions myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart) in younger patients, with slightly higher prevalence in those who received Moderna.
A STIKO spokesperson told Thailand
Medical News, "For people above the age of 30 there is no higher risk.”
Hence as a result, the Stiko commission updated its coronavirus vaccine guidance and "recommends that people under 30 only be vaccinated with Comirnaty," the BioNTech-Pfizer jab, one day after France issued similar guidance.
This new advisory covers both initial inoculations and booster jabs even if the first vaccine was Moderna, it added.
The German Standing Committee On Vaccination or STIKO bases its recommendations on the findings of Germany's Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines, which compiles data on side effects and complications.
It was reported that the United States also delayed approval of the Moderna jab for young people, though last week they recommended use of the Pfizer vaccine for children ages five to 11 after reviewing the risks of myocarditis.
Leading pediatric cardiologist Dr Matthew Oster, commenting on the Pfizer recommendation at the time, said he was "much more worried" about the risks of COVID to young people than risks posed by the vaccine.
In France, the public health authority has recommended people under 30 be given Pfizer's (PFE.N) Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine when available instead of Moderna Inc's (MRNA.O
) Spikevax jab, which they also said carried comparatively higher risks of heart-related problems.
Sweden is another country that has also temporarily suspended the use of Moderna for those under 30 years old.
None of the other Nordic countries ie Finland, Norway and Denmark have completely stopped using Moderna for all people under age 30. Finland is not using Moderna for males under 30 years old; Norway recommends that people under age 18 and men under age 30 take Pfizer instead of Moderna but does not require it; and Denmark said those under 18 can request Moderna if desired.
