Identified Cases And Two Suspected Deaths
Understanding West Nile Fever
West Nile fever is caused by the West Nile virus (WNV), a member of the Flaviviridae family. The virus is primarily transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes, particularly the Culex species. While most individuals infected with WNV do not develop symptoms, approximately 20% may experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, and fatigue. In rare cases, severe neurological complications like encephalitis or meningitis can occur, posing significant health risks.
History of West Nile Fever in Kerala
The history of West Nile fever in Kerala traces back to 2011 when the virus was first detected in the state. However, it wasn't until 2019 that the disease gained widespread attention following the tragic death of a six-year-old boy from Malappuram due to the fever. Subsequently, in May 2022, a 47-year-old man from Thrissur district succumbed to the virus, further highlighting the potential severity of WNV infections.
Current Outbreak Situation in Kerala
As of the latest reports, Kerala's Malappuram and Kozhikode districts have reported five confirmed cases of West Nile fever each making it a total of ten cases so far. of the these cases which include both adults and children, 9 have fortunately recovered and are now back at their homes. One is still currently hospitalized in an ICU ward in private hospital in Kozhikode.
Additionally, one person is currently under suspicion of being infected with the virus in Thrissur and is undergoing medical evaluation and treatment. Samples from symptomatic patients were sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for confirmation and detailed analysis.
There were also two suspected deaths linked to West Nile Fever in Kozhikode districts in recent days although there are no confirmations yet from health officials and the bodies have been sent for further investigations.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George, in a statement, confirmed that cases of the West Nile Fever viral infections have been reported in the State and that all the districts have been asked to be vigilant.

Symptoms and Diagnosis
The symptoms of West Nile fever can vary widely, making diagnosis challenging. While many infected individuals remain asymptomatic, those who do develop symptoms may experience fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases, neurological symptoms such as encephalitis or meningitis. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical symptoms, history of mosquito exposure, and laboratory tests to detect the virus or antibodies.
Treatment and Management
Unfortunately, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for West Nile fever. Management primarily focuses on supportive care, including hydration, pain relief, and monitoring for complications, especially in cases of neuroinvasive disease. Preventive measures such as mosquito control, wearing protective clothing, and using insect repellents play a crucial role in reducing the risk of infection.
Public Health Response and Challenges
In response to the outbreak, the Kerala government has activated heightened surveillance and response protocols across all districts. Health authorities are closely monitoring suspected cases, conducting epidemiological investigations, and providing necessary medical care to those affected. Public awareness campaigns emphasizing mosquito bite prevention, early symptom recognition, and seeking prompt medical attention are also being conducted to mitigate further spread.
Global Context and Collaboration
West Nile fever is not confined to Kerala or India; it is a global health concern. The virus has been reported in various regions across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, North America, and West Asia. Its potential to cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and immunocompromised individuals, underscores the need for ongoing research, surveillance, and international collaboration in addressing emerging infectious diseases.
Conclusion
The West Nile fever outbreak in Kerala serves as a poignant reminder of the persistent threats posed by mosquito-borne diseases. While the current cases have been managed effectively, the situation highlights the importance of robust public health infrastructure, early detection, and community engagement in disease prevention. As efforts continue to control the outbreak, ongoing research, capacity-building, and global partnerships will be essential in safeguarding public health and mitigating the impact of infectious diseases worldwide.
