COVID-19 Supplements: A new study by researchers from School of Pharmacy at the University of Shandong-China, the College of Medicine at Texas A&M University-USA, the Neuroscience Institute at Baylor Scott & White Health-Texas-USA and Shandong Yingdong Yinghao Biotechnology Inc-China has found that L-theanine and its derivatives could be used to treat COVID-19 especially in infections involving the Delta and Omicron variants.
L-theanine, also known as L-γ-glutamylethylamide and N⁵-ethyl-L-glutamine, is an amino acid analogue of the proteinogenic amino acids L-glutamate and L-glutamine.
L-theanine, an amino acid is found primarily in green and black tea and some mushrooms.
Numerous past research efforts have shown that tea has activities against SARS-CoV-2. However, the active compounds and the action mechanisms are largely unknown.
The
COVID-19 Supplements study team studied the inhibitory potential of L-theanine from tea and its semi-synthesized derivative, a small-molecule fluorescent compound, ethyl 6-bromocoumarin-3-carboxylyl L-theanine (TBrC) against infection and replication of SARS-CoV-2 and the underlying mechanisms of action.
The study findings revealed that TBrC has potential activities against SARS-CoV-2 in addition to its activity against lung cancer. TBrC showed extracellular inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 Mpro/3CL and the host cell receptor ACE2 while interacting with the viral spike glycoproteins (wild-type, Delta, and Omicron mutants).
Moreover, TBrC and L-theanine significantly suppressed growth and TNFα-induced nuclear transcriptional activation of NF-κB in human lung cancer cells without affecting the viability of normal lung cells, suggesting a potential protection of TBrC and L-theanine from pulmonary damages in SARS-CoV-2 infected patients, especially for lung cancer patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.
The study findings were published in the peer reviewed journal: Heliyon (Cell).

Case studies by Japanese researchers also showed that L-Theanine had therapeutic effects in treating COVID-19 due to both its ant-inflammatory properties and also its antiviral benefits.

A past randomized trial showed that L-theanine could also be used to treat common colds due to both it antiviral properties and also its immune boosting properties when used along with the amino-acid L-Cystine.

Studies have already shown that L-Theanine is also able to boost the immune system.

One past study focused on the immune boosting effects of L-Theanine with regards to the COVID-19 disease.

Another Japanese research showed the antiviral properties of L-Theanine in black and green tea in terms of its ability to inhibit the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a vitro study.

The Japanese are currently using L-Theanine as part of their treatment protocols in the current devastating wave that is affecting the country due to the highly transmissible and highly immune evasive BA.5 variant and its various subvariants. In the last few days, Japan has been reporting more than 200,000 new COVID-19 infections per day.
When planning to purchase L-Theanine supplements, do not buy supplements made in Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam or India as most are substandard. We recommend only the following brands of L-Theanine supplements...Now Foods, Solaray, Best Doctor, Solgar, Puritan's Pride, Natrol and Nutra Life.
