BREAKING! Measles News: After Mild SARS-CoV-2 Waves, Immune Dysfunctional South Africans Facing New Measles Outbreak! New Morbillivirus Variant?
Measles News -South Africa Outbreak  Dec 10, 2022  1 year, 11 months, 1 week, 4 days, 5 hours, 2 minutes ago
Measles News: The South African National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) is reporting a rise in measles cases in 4 of the 9 provinces in the country following a measles outbreak that was reported in the province of Limpopo in mid-October 2022.
https://www.nicd.ac.za/south-african-measles-outbreak-2022-measles-outbreak-in-four-provinces/

As of date, there has been a total of 137 laboratory confirmed measles cases while there are hundreds more that are being investigated.

The four provinces that have been infected include Limpopo (89 cases), Mpumalanga (41 cases), Gauteng (3) and the North West province (4 cases).

It should be noted that WHO (world Health organization) defines a measles outbreak as 3 cases reported in a single district in one month.

What is interesting is that the new measles outbreak is affecting both children and adults with age of cases across the country ranging from 2 months to 42 years. However, the dominant age category of laboratory-confirmed cases is the 5-9 years age group. Also, about 17 who developed measles had been vaccinated while 98 had unknown vaccination status and the remaining 22 claimed to be have been unvaccinated!

According to local Measles News reports, most of those infected with measles tend to manifest fever, rash, cough, red eyes, diarrhea and a runny nose. A number of them have been hospitalized due to pneumonia and encephalitis.

The outbreak is causing alarm among the medical and research community as South Africa had been affected by numerous waves of COVID-19 by various variants which local ‘experts’ claim to be mild.

As its already known that exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus can make individuals to develop a dysfunctional immune system coupled with the fact that a significant proportion might also develop COVID-19 induced immunodeficiency, making the more susceptible to secondary opportunistic pathogenic infections.

Furthermore, with more than two thirds of the global population already exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the global human immune landscape has changes and this can also be a contributing factor for other pathogens to evolve and mutate.

Some are speculating that new variants of the Morbillivirus ie the causative agent for measles, could be at play here and warrants urgent research.

Furthermore, it should be noted that there is a high number of HIV patients in South Africa who are immunocompromised and many are not even having access to proper treatments. Such individuals are perfect “breeding grounds’ for viruses to evolve and mutate.

The m easles virus is highly contagious and is airborne. It is a single-stranded, enveloped RNA virus with 1 serotype. It is classified as a member of the genus Morbillivirus in the Paramyxoviridae family. Humans are the only natural hosts of measles virus.

Thailand Medical News predicts that the United Kingdom will be the next country to witness a measles outbreak withing the next 5 months or less but with more severe manifestations.

Though there were only 23 laboratory confirmed cases of measles reported in the United Kingdom between April and June 2022, the next outbreak of measles in the United Kingdom will be exponential.

We also envisage that a number of other disease outbreaks will also occur in the United Kingdom withing the next few months which will set the trend for other countries in Europe and also in the United States.
