While the world is dealing with the Covid-19 crisis that originated from China, most were not aware that another new zoonotic virus has emerged in China and it reported on the 24th Of March that a male worker was on the way to work to Shandong along with 29 other people on a chartered bus on Sunday began to feel unwell on the way and was sent to hospital in Ningshan county, Shannxi Province where he died despite treatment on Monday morning. It was discovered that the death patient had tested positive for
Orthohantavirus. The case appeared in numerous Chinese dailies including the English Global Times,
https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1183691.shtml and has been confirmed by Chinese health authorities.
All the other 29 workers have been place in quarantined and all have tested negative for the Covid-19 disease including the dead patient. However they are all pending results for presence the
Orthohantavirus that is also known as hantavirus.
So far cases of human-to-human transmission of hantavirus are rare. Typically humans may become infected with Hantavirus if they come in contact with rodent urine, saliva, or faeces.
Early symptoms of the virus include fatigue, fever, and muscle aches, along with headache, dizziness, chills and abdominal problems. If left untreated, it can lead to coughing and shortness of breath and finally death.
The disease is thought to have a fatality rate of 36%, though cases remain rare.
Virologists are claiming that the Hantavirus is highly unlikely to be the next global pandemic.
To date Hantaviruses have been recorded for decades, and is not a new phenomenon; a single human death from the virus is not cause for concern, and hardly constitutes an 'outbreak'.
The already uncommon viruses are rarely spread between humans. Although human-to-human transmission of a similar virus was reported in South America in both 2005 and 2019, hantaviruses have almost entirely been linked to human contact with rodent excrement.
However Chinese health authorities are concerned as unconfirmed cases were also reported in the last 24 hours in Yunan province.
Despite coverups, and claims that the Covid-19 situation is under control in China with lockdowns being lifted, healthcare professionals are claiming otherwise that the situation is worsening in Xinjiang, Zhejiang and also in Helongjiang but there is heavy censored of news. These reports have not been confirmed to date. Healthcare and government officials have been warned against leaking any news while all social media platforms have been more stringently censored with internet access cut of in these provinces.
A virologist from the UK warned that international health authorities should monitor the situation more closely as China has an affinity for lying and coverups and another emerging virus based pandemic could be catastrophic for the world.
