Thailand Medical: Many in Thailand and even those elsewhere are oblivious that there is a ‘silent’ COVID-19 surge currently occurring across the country and that many hospitals, both public and private are beginning to feel the pressure as both outpatients and inpatient admissions are rising at worrisome levels.

What Thailand is currently experiencing in terms of a new COVID-19 surge is not unique to the country as many other nations such as Singapore, the United Kingdom, parts of the United States, Australia, Canada, France are all facing the start of a new COVID-19 surge driven by a whole new range of SARS-CoV-2 variants from the KP Lineage.

The only difference in this current surge that is expected to become a global crisis in coming weeks is that many governments across the world are either concealing the actual situation or are down playing the situation. Some are even meddling with COVID-19 statistical data and figures and are either finding ways to release lower than actual figures or are simply outwardly lying about the situation!
The new KP sub-lineages such as KP.1, KP.1.1, KP.1.1.1, KP.2, KP.2.2 and KP.3 alongside other variants such KQ.1, KR.1 and KS.1 are all more transmissible and immune evasive based on analysis of the mutations found on them despite false claims by health authorities and so-called ‘experts’ from certain countries that there is no evidence that these new KP sub-lineages are as such.
The question that should be asked is that if these new sub-lineages are not more immune evasive, then why are we witnessing more cases of disease severity as more of the infected are developing chromic conditions that requires hospitalization.
Also, one worrisome point that is being observed in countries at the moment is that many hospitalized with the KP sub-lineages are taking a longer time to recover, adding to the pressure of healthcare providers as beds are not being freed and as cases accumulate, hospitals are running out of hospital be

SARS-CoV-2 Spread Could be Extensive In the Country.
As there were no data released with regards to actual COVID-19 infections in the country, many medical experts warn the actual spread of the virus could be very extensive.
There is also no data in term of the number of COVID-19 test done, the COVID-19 positivity rates or even data on the number of ICU admissions and the actual numbers needing ventilation.
Strangely, the COVID-19 hospitalization figures for Thailand seems to be very low when compared to Singapore that is also experiencing a massive COVID-19 surge at the moment.
COVID-19 admission data from certain private hospitals in Thailand show that certain figures could actually exceed certain reported data and many speculate that the actual number of COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths could be much higher than reported.
Many private hospitals are indicating that COVID-19 admissions and outpatient visits are increasing at rates reminiscent of the Delta surge.
Thailand Medical and healthcare experts are also warning that while many might only suffer from mild symptoms, the long-term impacts of Long COVID could actually cause issues for Thailand’s healthcare infrastructure in the very near future.
Medical experts warn that many could be susceptible to Long COVID issues even if they were asymptomatic or only had mild symptoms and worse, the new KP variants are more better adapted for viral persistence and could cause more issues such as organ failures especially that of the heart, liver, pancreas and kidneys, gastrointestinal issues, neurological issues especially strokes, blood clots issues, sepsis, various kinds of ischemia and also neurodegenerative issues and also cancers emergence and progression.
It is anticipated that Thailand will be faced with the burden of such medical incidences rising at exponential levels in the near future.
The total COVID-19 hospitalized cases since the start of 2024 paints a broader picture of the COVID-19 crisis in the country, a total of 16,819 patients have been hospitalized due to COVID-19 complications.
For the same period of time, a total of 120 COVID-19 deaths were reported. These worrisome figures underscore the persistent impact of the virus on public health and healthcare systems, necessitating continued vigilance and robust response measures.
Experts predict that COVID-19 cases will continue to rise in Thailand in coming weeks. With schools now open and a number of local holidays in Thailand approaching for the month of May including for the coming Buddhist holiday of Visakha Bucha where a lot of temple festivities are expected along with crowds, the spread of the virus is expected to intensify.
Complains are also mounting about laxed health screenings at airports and borders and it is believed that many tourists are bringing in the new strains of SARS-CoV-2 viruses into the country.
Conclusions
The current COVID-19 surge in Thailand driven by the KP variants is expected to continue to rise and we can also expect to see more added stress on the healthcare sector with doctors, nurses and hospitals bearing the brunt.
It will be interesting to see monitor the actual excess deaths rates in the next few weeks and months.
