Local
Thailand Medical doctors and healthcare professionals are concerned as the rising COVID-19 hospitalizations could put a strain on the healthcare infrastructure in the country. Furthermore, it has been observed that many hospitalized with COVID-19 this time are taking a much longer time to recover, hence hospital beds that are not being freed on a timely manner is causing a potential shortage of COVId-19 beds in various hospitals across the country. Already some of the private hospitals in Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya and Chiangmai are beginning to witness potential bed shortages for COVID-19 patients.
There has also been reports from various hospitals of a high increase in outpatients seeking treatments for respiratory symptoms in the last two weeks.
The newer SARS-CoV-2 KP.3 variant which is highly immune evasive and highly transmissible is possibly behind the surge in infections and hospitalizations in the country.

While there have been no official announcements by Thailand medical experts about the detection of the KP.3 variant in Thailand, data from the COV-Spectrum platform and also from GISAID has shown that the KP.3 variant has already made its debut in Thailand since about three weeks ago.

We can expert some of the usual local characters to come
forth on some of the local garbage media platforms and claim that there is no evidence that KP.3 is driving disease severity and that the current COVID-19 vaccines and boosters still offer protection!
However, Chinese experts that have much more better knowledge that any Thais have already warned that KP.3 is not only more immune evasive and highly transmissible but it has stronger biding affinity for ACE2 receptors which could affect the pathogenicity outcomes!

At present, the KP.3 variant is wreaking havoc in Spain and Australia where it is not only driving hospitalizations to alarming levels but is also literally wiping out the elderly in certain locations!

Alarmingly, the KP.3 variant is also spawning a lot of newer concerning sub-lineages with unique mutations on them including KP.3.1, KP.3.1.1, KP.3.1.2, KP.3.2. KP.3.3 etc. At present about 16 different KP.3 sub-lineages have been detected!
Thailand Medical News strongly advises all those in the vulnerable groups especially the elderly to not only to wear mask and practice preventive measure such as social distancing but if possible, try to isolate themselves till this surge hopefully goes away.
Also, there is a lot of repurposed drugs, supplements and herbal products that one should take as a preventive measure but always consult doctor before taking anything.
