SARS-CoV-2 B.1.640.2 Variant: Further to our breaking coverage of the new SARS-CoV-2 variant B..640.2 originating from Cameroon and spreading in Southern France, we have got latest updates that the number of cases in Provence-Alpes-Côte region Azure and also in surrounding areas have swelled to 952 cases as of the 1
st Of January 2022.(Last update on 13
th of Dec by French health authorities was 323 cases)

The Omicron surge along with the Delta subvariants affecting the country is making things extremely difficult for health authorities and also doctors to monitor the number of
SARS-CoV-2 B.1.640.2 Variant cases and there is lack of resources to conduct genomic sequencings on every case in the country.
Further to this, preliminary genomic surveillance data is also showing that the B.1.640.2 variant has already spread to Monaco and the United Kingdom. In the UK it is now believed that at least 17 individuals already have the B.1.640.2 variant but we are unavailable to get any details from UK health officials at the moment.
The main B.1.640 variant is classified as a variant under investigation (VUM) by Public Health France (at 12/11/2021) as well as by WHO, ECDC and UKHSA. Since December 8, 2021, the B.1.640 lineage has been divided into two sublines: B.1.640.1 and B.1.640.2.
B.1.640.1 corresponds to the sequences of B.1.640 initially detected, and is majority. B.1.640.2 was detected within a cluster at the end of November 2021 in the Provence-Alpes-Côte region Azure.
B.1.640.2 is characterized by the presence of the E484K mutation (one of the targets of the current strategy screening), which is not present in B.1.640.1. The discrimination between these two sub-lineages is not still included in bioinformatic analysis tools. In this risk analysis, no difference is made between the two sublineages of B.1.640 and all cases are considered 20A / C variants B.1.640.

Data obtained from Github has shown that similar to the recent split of B.1.1.529(Omicron) into two sister sublineages it appears B.1.640 may also have a similar issue with a major group constating of the vast majority of sequences and a small outgroup which appears related but has a very different set of mutations (EPI_ISL_7181977; EPI_ISL_7156959; EPI_ISL_7156955; EPI_ISL_6315910; EPI_ISL_5926666) and includes sequences from France and England, indicating degree of spread.

According to preliminary data from French researchers, the new B.640.2 is just as transmissible as the Delta but is causing more severe disease conditions. It is also possible that it is more immune evasive than the Delta considering that most of those infected and have been hospitalized were fully vaccinated and some already had booster shots. The fact that many are in severe conditions and almost all requiring hospitalizations is not a very positive indicator of things to come.
However, as many health officials, researchers and also experts are busy with their Christmas and New Year breaks, not much effort is being placed urgent required research on this new variant.
While Europe is just focusing on the Omicron variant and its emerging sublineages (Yes, the Omircon is evolving and mutating rapidly and a lot of new sub-variants are fast emerging which no one is covering at the moment!.....the B.1.640.2 variant is also fast spreading quietly.

The problems are also further complicated with many emerging Delta subvariants still playing a key role in the current surges.
We are definitely going to witness more co-infections in the European continent and also the emergence of more interesting recombinant strains in coming weeks.
