China’s State Councillor Wang Yi, who also serves as China’s foreign minister, said China has taken the most rigorous and decisive measures to fight the
coronavirus epidemic, with many efforts going beyond international health regulations and World Health Organisation (WHO)recommendations. “Through our efforts the epidemic is overall under control,” he said.
He defended Beijing’s management of the epidemic and lashed out at overreaction of some other countries including about travel bans and travel restrictions to and from China.
Meanwhile China has introduced ‘wartime’ measures which include immediate detention and arrest of suspected
coronavirus infected individuals. Verified reports have emerged that thousands of people are being snatched from their homes and even on the streets by the police and army personnel and placed into new temporary detention centres without access to proper medical facilities. They are even confirmed reports that people are being ‘sealed in’ and prevented from leaving housing complexes and hotels but with food and delivery arrangements made by army personnel. In certain extreme cases, verified video footages have emerged of housing complexes being welded shut. (some have described scenes that resemble the holocausts)
Chinese authorities have also issued a new rule that anyone returning to Beijing has to undergo a 14-day self-quarantine to help prevent spread of the
coronavirus.
The Beijing Daily newspaper said people failing to obey would be punished but it was not immediately clear how that would be enforced, or whether the restrictions would apply to non-residents of Beijing or foreigners arriving from abroad.
The new rules are creating chaos in the capital as people are trying to decipher out the details of the announcement.
For a country that is saying it has the whole situation under control, more cities and provinces are into lockdown while Shanghai is expected to also get into lockdown mode this weekend.
It was also reported that stricter containment measures were planned elsewhere as well. Honghu city in Hubei province imposed a “wartime”lock-down beginning on Friday, with strict management of entry into housing compounds and villages, according to an official social media account of the local police, China’s CCTV reported.
Meanwhile the number of patients progressing into severe critical status is fast increasing with almost 11,000 patients so far and is becoming a concern to medical experts overseas while causing stress to China’s own healthcare facilities.
