Singapore health authorities reported nine more cases of confirmed
coronavirus infections, bringing the total to 67, the second highest out of China, besides Japan. But what is of concern it that there seems to be new cases each day and most are via human and human transmissions involving people who have never been to China the last three months, and also individuals who were never in contact with past identified cases, heightening the fear that the
coronavirus could be silently spreading throughout the population.
Six of the new cases were linked to a church called The Grace Assembly of God Church. The church is now the biggest cluster, with 13 confirmed
coronavirus infected cases.
Though more cases are being uncovered each day , the government has no plans to upgrade its current health alert level to red just yet as the situation is still manageable said Singapore’s Health Minister Gan Kim Yong at a press conference. Instead more measures will be put into place to contain the spread and control the situation.
Mr Gan, who co-chairs a multi-ministry task force with National Development Minister Lawrence Wong added, "I want to say categorically that we have no plans to go to Dorscon red."
Dorscon or Disease Outbreak Response System Condition is a Singapore public health alertness platform. It was moved from yellow to orange on February 7
th after cases with no links with pasts identified cases were observed. Orange indicates that the disease is severe and spreads easily between people, but it has not spread widely in Singapore and is being contained. Red is for when the disease is severe and spreading widely.
Some of the churches in Singapore are planning to cancel services for a while and the Catholic community has also said that it would cancel all masses from Saturday onwards until conditions return to normal.
Meanwhile, Malaysia also reported new cases today, bring the total to 19.
The number of infected
coronavirus cases in out of China stands at 602 cases spanning 27 countries.
