Despite WHO’s optimism that the virus seems to be stabilizing in China, there seems to be imminent danger that new
coronavirus epicenters will emerge in other parts of the world as what is
happening in China at the moment with newer cities fighting the battle in provinces like Chongqing, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Henan and Hunan despite being downplayed by Chinese authorities.
Singapore is now the leading country outside China with the most cases of
coronavirus infections, numbering to a total of 40 with newer cases being due to local domestic transmissions taking place. However Singapore is not much of a concern as the figures are actually due to efficient detection and isolation system by the local health authorities and also the government. Furthermore it has a very transparent system of reporting to ensure the safety of its citizens and foreign residents, which is its main priority. Its recent system of health alertness was raised to orange just a step below red, in order to ensure that more measures was put into place for public safety.
Countries like Japan (90 cases), South Korea (25 cases), Taiwan (17 cases) and even Hong Kong (26 cases) have proper measures in place to prevent any kind of ‘epidemic mess” and similarly to Singapore, they have a very transparent manner of updating the actual conditions and number of infections in the country.
The countries that are of a concern in South-East Asia are
Thailand (only 32 cases?), Malaysia (16 cases), Vietnam (14 cases), Myanmar (none?), Cambodia (1 case), Philippines (3 cases) and Indonesia.(none?)
Many are concern that in Myanmar and Indonesia that have not reported a single
coronavirus infection so far, the actual spread could be going
undetected in an extensive manner.
Furthermore all these countries do not have effective strategies in place and also are more concern with their economies and image rather than the danger the
coronavirus poses to its citizens.
Many experts are now admitting that the
coronavirus has
fast multiplying capabilities and besides being
potent, has a better transmission rate than that of the SARS or MERS
coronaviruses. Also of concern is the f
act that the virus is indeed
mutating and that already a
subtype has emerged.
Many are already resigning themselves to the fact that this
coronavirus is unlikely to go away anytime soon but rather is going to be there for a long time with a couple of surprises of its own.
