Thailand Medical: The new SARS-CoV-2 sub-lineages from the KP lineage are continuing to wreak havoc in Thailand unknown to many. With very little media coverage and literally the absence of any health warnings to the masses, many locals and expats are oblivious of what is really happening in the country.
COVID-19 Continues To Surge In Thailand
Sadly, healthcare professionals working in hospitals and health centers are bearing the brunt of the surge sweeping across the country as hospitals start to see rising COVID-19 caseloads…..both inpatient and outpatient.
Latest Official COVID-19 Figures For The Week 28th April to 4th May 2024
According to data released by the Thailand’s Department of Disease control of the Ministry of Public health, there were a total of 1,792 new COVID-19 hospitalizations for the week 28
th April to 4
th of May 2024.
This worked out to an average of about 256 new COVID-19 hospitalizations per day.
In terms of COVID-19 deaths, it was reported that there were 12 news deaths for the reported week.

It should be noted that there is no way to validate the official figures released and also it should be noted that a lot of data is being omitted these days including actual number of COVID-19 test done, COVID-19 test positivity rates and now they even started omitting data on ICU admissions and numbers needing mechanical ventilation. In some cases, data from private hospitals show that certain figures actually exceed certain reported data and many speculate that the actual number of COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths could be much higher than reported.
What is also worrying is that the COVID-19 spread among the masses could be at astronomical figures and worse, the uncontrolled silent spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus could lead to the possible emergence of newer sub-lineages.
While many might only suffer from mild symptoms, the long-term impacts of Long COVID could actually cause issues for Thailand’s healthcare infrastructure in the very near future.
Thailand Medical authorities have not initiated any informative or educational communications strategies to warn locals of the unfolding COVID-19 situation in the country.
More Cases Of Disease Severity being Observed
It is being suspected that the authorities stopped reporting the actual number of cases in ICU and those needing mechanical ventilation to downplay or conceal the seriousness of the situation.
According to local doctors, they are seeing more cases of individuals manifesting disease severity and the situation i
s reminiscent of the Delta wave.
Longer Recovery Periods
One anomaly that many doctors are reporting is that many hospitalized patients are taking a longer time for recovery. This is causing a stress on hospitals and the healthcare infrastructure as hospital beds are not being freed and the accumulating weekly cases are creating a shortage of COVID-19 beds in some hospitals. Furthermore, ICU wards and ventilators are also starting to face shortages in some locations.
Cumulative Hospitalized Cases For COVID-19 Since the Start of 2024
The total COVID-19 hospitalized cases since January 2024 paints a broader picture of the COVID-19 crisis in the country. Since the start of 2024, a total of 13,057 patients have been hospitalized due to COVID-19 complications.
At the same time, a total of 93 COVID-19 deaths were reported for the same period. These worrisome figures underscore the persistent impact of the virus on public health and healthcare systems, necessitating continued vigilance and robust response measures.
Locals Oblivious, No Preventive Measures
Thailand is currently on a long weekend holiday and many Thais can be see at shopping malls, beaches and at resorts not wearing any N95masks or even practicing any preventive measures. Many are still under the illusion that COVID-19 is over or that the COVID-19 vaccines will protect them!
We expect that COVID-19 cases will continue to rise in Thailand in coming weeks.
More Threats Expected - Emergence Of LA.2 Variant in United Kingdom.
A new SARS-CoV-2 sub-lineage called LA.2 with the N mutation G243C has emerged in the United Kingdom.

Based on past studies, this new lineage is likely to drive disease severity and with lots of low-end Brits visiting Thailand for its cheap sex industry along with the laxed health screenings at airports and at the borders, this new sub-lineage will likely make its way to Thailand in a matter of time.
