COVID-19 News: The Singapore Straits Times reported that COVID-19 Hospitalizations has risen to 280 in the last seven days.

According to the media report, the figure was released by the Singapore Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung.

The Minister also called for the vulnerable to get an additional COVID-19 vaccine shot.

There was no release on data as to the total number of COVID-19 infections now in the country or data with regards to COVID-19 positivity rates or number of COVID-19 test conducted etc. Searches on the Singapore MOH’s website for such data was futile.

The estimated number of COVID-19 cases in the week of May 5th to 11th was 25,900… almost double from the week before.

Media coverages of a high demand for COVID-19 test kits in the country indicates that cases must really be rising. Some pharmacies reported seeing a 150 per cent increase in demand in the last week.

The surge in COVID-19 cases in Singapore is being driven by the new SARS-CoV-2 ‘FLiRT’ variants namely KP.1 and KP.2. The WHO has already classified the KP.2 as a variant under monitoring as of the 3rd of May 2024. Some preprint studies show that the KP.2 is more immune evasive.

Despite the rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations not only in Singapore but also elsewhere where the new KP variants are causing havoc, some so called ‘experts’ are claiming that these new variants are not driving any disease severity and that there is no need to panic. (Please refer back to the same claims in past COVID-19 News coverages made during the emergence of Omicron when it was claimed by certain ‘experts’ that the variant was mild..look at the number of deaths that wave caused and also the excess death rates for that period.

Interestingly, it seems no one died from th e COVID-19 surge in Singapore in the last three weeks as there has never been any mention of COVID-19 deaths.

Anyway, as far as Singapore is concerned, readers should not be too worried about the COVID-19 situation there. They have stringent laws and media censorship laws to deal with any health crisis in the country.
