COVID-19 News: In a shocking revelation, Dr Paweł Grzesiowski, a prominent medical expert, disputes official COVID-19 data and claims that Poland is currently experiencing a staggering 50,000 to 60,000 daily infections, fueled by the new SARS-CoV-2 sub-lineages in circulation.

Since mid-August, an estimated three to five million people have fallen victim to the latest variant, painting a grim picture of a pandemic peak that is slipping under the radar of official monitoring efforts.

In an exclusive interview with a local government COVID-19 News portal, Dr Grzesiowski warns that the situation is far more dire than initially reported. He asserts that the new SARS-CoV-2 variants has ushered in a new phase of the pandemic, characterized by a high number of cases but relatively fewer severe outcomes. According to his estimates, 50,000 to 60,000 individuals are contracting the virus each day, marking a significant departure from the earlier waves of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

"This is a situation of mass disease that cannot be compared to the beginning of the pandemic," Dr Grzesiowski emphasizes. "We have various new SARS-CoV-2  variants now, resulting in a surge in cases. However, the symptoms are milder, with fewer instances of severe lung damage. People are often underestimating the severity of the disease, thinking they can recover with minimal consequences."

One of the contributing factors to the underreported numbers is the minimal testing taking place.

Dr Grzesiowski highlights the lack of free COVID-19 testing facilities and the perception among the public that the disease is not a serious problem. This leads to a significant portion of infected individuals going undetected and unreported, further complicating efforts to understand the true scale of the crisis.

"When people believe they can recover at home without much trouble, they are less inclined to seek testing. This, coupled with the scarcity of testing facilities, creates a situation where many cases go unnoticed," explains Dr Grzesiowski.

He said that many are unaware of Long COVID or about viral persistence and what damages the SARS-CoV-2 virus can do to the host body over the time.

"We are facing a different scenario compared to two or three years ago, and this requires a reevaluation of our approach to monitoring and reporting COVID-19 data."

Asked about the current stage of the epidemic, Dr Grzesiowski provides a glimpse of hope amid the grim statistics. &q uot;It seems that we peaked in November, and now we are starting to descend from the peak. Two weeks ago, the 'R' replication rates were above 2, but now they have dropped to about 1.5. While the rate of new infections remains high, this signals a forthcoming decrease in cases. In approximately 1.5 months, we can expect an improvement in the overall situation," he predicts.

However, the expert's optimistic outlook is contingent on a reassessment of testing strategies, increased availability of testing facilities, and a more accurate representation of the true extent of the pandemic. Dr Grzesiowski urges authorities to take immediate action to address these challenges, emphasizing that a more proactive approach is essential to managing the ongoing crisis effectively.

As the world grapples with the various new SARS-CoV-2 variants, Dr Grzesiowski's revelations shed light on the need for a comprehensive and dynamic response to the evolving nature of the pandemic. The disparity between official figures and the actual scale of infections underscores the urgency of addressing testing deficiencies and enhancing public awareness to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Poland and beyond. The fate of the ongoing battle against the virus hinges on the ability of health authorities to adapt swiftly to the ever-changing landscape of the pandemic.
