COVID-19 News: Just like many other countries around the world, the COVID-19 situation in Peru is fast escalating with weekly new infections now rising to above 1700 despite low testing rates.

Various local COVID-19 News outlets have confirmed the rise in COVID-19 infections although testing is very low in the country.

Peru's Health Minister, César Vásquez has urged citizens of his country to remain calm in the face of an increase in COVID-19 cases and instead has recommended that individuals get vaccinated again against the disease.

"While there is a significant increase in cases, it does not correlate proportionally with hospitalizations, intensive care admissions, and deaths. We appeal for calm; people can continue with their routines, but they should not forget the preventive measures. If they have symptoms compatible with COVID-19, use a mask," said Vásquez, as quoted in a statement from his office distributed this Friday.

The head of Peru's Health Department, the country with the highest COVID-19 mortality rate in the world, explained that the nation's available bivalent vaccine protects against new virus lineages, thus preventing severe complications.
Regarding the progress of vaccination, Vásquez specified that over three million bivalent vaccines have been administered in 2023, with more than a million given to individuals aged 60 and older.

"We have a sufficient quantity of bivalent vaccines, which are the most effective doses against the virus lineages circulating in the country. There is no better way to protect oneself than with the vaccine, and this government is ensuring it," he emphasized.

Meanwhile despite the rising COVID-19 infections, the President of the Council of Ministers of Peru, Alberto Otárola Peñaranda, stated yesterday that year-end parties or social gatherings will not be prohibited.

Peru identifies f irst 12 cases of new COVID-19 variant JN.1

The National Institute of Health of the ministry identified the cases through genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in respiratory samples taken in November in different regions of the country.

The cases include people aged between 23 and 58, who so far are stable and under outpatient management, the ministry said in a statement.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classified the JN.1 coronavirus strain as a separate variant of interest from the parent lineage BA.2.86

Hospitals across Peru are witnessing a rise in COVID-19 admissions coupled with outpatient clinics filled with sick people seeking help.

Doctors are worried as the JN.1 variant seems to affecting those over 60 and also young children below the age of 10 badly with many developing disease severity and needing to be hospitalized.
