Just in the last 24 hours, researchers have identified new variant ie BF.7 that posts an additional C1243F spike mutation that is also seen in another new variant hat seems to be also driving disease severity in other countries ie the BQ.1.2 variant. https://github.com/cov-lineages/pango-designation/issues/1470
This new BF.7 variant with a C1243F spike mutation also spots other unique mutations such as ORF7a:H47Y, ORF1b:L238F, ORF1a:V274L and also another spike mutation C29632T.
The ORF7a protein is able to affect autophagy, interferons and monocytes of the human host and is involved with viral replication https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35670302/
Besides the new BF.7 variant with additional mutations found in China, it is also suspected that two other new variants found also in Japan could also be at play in China. These two other new variants have already been
