COVID-19 News: New BA.5 Sublineages Continue To Emerge Globally As Virus Evolves Rapidly. New DY.1 Variant Emerges In China. (BA.5.2.48 with S:A570S)
COVID-19 News - DY.1 - BA.5 Sublineage Jan 30, 2023 1 year, 9 months, 3 weeks, 2 days, 15 hours ago
COVID-19 News: Various New BA.5 sub-lineages are continuing to emerge globally as the SARS-CoV-2 continues to evade all forms of immunity, be it by previous infections or even by vaccine or booster induced immunity, not to forget that it is also mutating to evade all the current antivirals being used and even repurposed drugs or supplements being used unofficially to curtail its presence or viral load in the human host.
Many are still ignorant enough to assume that some of the unofficial prophylactic or therapeutic protocols involving the usage of certain ‘repurposed’ drugs, supplements and phytochemicals used in the earlier part of the pandemic will still help them, unaware that the dynamics of such protocols are changing rapidly as the virus is mutating at an unprecedented rate and not just involving new spike mutations but even mutations on the envelope, nucleocapsid and non -structural proteins.
Many new BA.5 sub-lineages have been identified and designated in the last 24 hours including a number of new BF sub-lineages and BA.5.2 sub-lineages in China.
Among these are:
-
DY.1 aka BA.5.2.48.1 (B.1.1.529.5.2.48.1)
More than 450 sequences have been identified in China and also elsewhere in Easts Asia and South East Asia and this variant seems to be growing fast. It spots a unique spike mutation: A570S)

-
BF.7.14.2 aka B.1.1.529.5.2.1.7.14.2
Yet another spawn from the BF.7.14 that is wreaking havoc in China and elsewhere in East Asia, this new BF sub-lineage spots the spike mutation Q14H which some speculate increases risk of disease severity due to enhanced immune evasion even from previous infections.

- BF.7.14.3 aka B.1.1.529.5.2.1.7.14.3
Another spawn from BF.7.14, this sub-lineage spots the A626V spike mutation.

-
DZ.1 aka BA.5.2.49.1 (B.1.1.529.5.2.49.1)
The spawn of another BA.5 sub-lineage that is also predominant in China and elsewhere in East Asia spotting the spike mutation D1146Y

Elsewhere in the United States, Canada and Europe, the BA.5 sub-lineage ie BQ.1.1 aka B.1.1.529.5.3.1.1.1.1.1.1 has also been spawning a variety of new subvariants
as its competes with the various XBB sub-lineages and also BA.2.75 sub-lineages including the CH.1.1 and spawns of CH.1.1 for global dominance.
Some of these new BA.5 sub-lineages include:
-
BQ.1.1.40 aka B.1.1.529.5.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.40
A BQ.1.1 sub-lineage with the nucleocapsid mutation T241 with a seemingly high growth advantage with more than 1000 sequences found in North America and Europe in the last 7 days.

-
BQ-1-1.41 aka B.1.1.529.5.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.41
Another BQ.1.1 sub-lineage with the spike mutation K182I with more than 1000 sequences detected in the last 7 days in United States and Europe.

-
BQ.1.1.42 aka B.1.1.529.5.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.42
Yet another spawn of the BQ.1.1 sub-lineage with the spike mutation S704L.

-
BQ.1.1.43 aka B.1.1.529.5.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.43
A BQ.1.1 spawn with the spike mutation Q613H and also the mutation C26292T mutation that is being closely monitored as most samples were from hospitalized patients exhibiting disease severity in United States and some Scandinavian countries.

-
BQ.1.1.44 aka B.1.1.529.5.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.44
Another BQ.1.1 sub-lineage with the spike mutation D253G with about 100 sequences detected in the last 7 days.
https://cov-spectrum.org/explore/World/AllSamples/Past6M/variants?nextcladePangoLineage=BQ.1.1.44
- BQ.1.1.45 aka B.1.1.529.5.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.45
A BQ.1.1 spawn with the spike mutation Y248D with more than 300 sequences detected so far globally.
https://cov-spectrum.org/explore/World/AllSamples/Past6M/variants?nextcladePangoLineage=BQ.1.1.45
- BQ.1.1.46 aka B.1.1.529.5.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.46
Another BQ.1.1 sub-lineage with the spike mutation F157L.
https://cov-spectrum.org/explore/World/AllSamples/Past6M/variants?nextcladePangoLineage=BQ.1.1.46
-
BQ.1.1.47 aka B.1.1.529.5.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.47
A BQ.1.1 spawn with the spike mutation K147I with more than 250 sequences detected in the last 5 days and is also possibly another worrisome sub-lineage that is being monitored. Found in United States Canada and Europe.

While there are also numerous other XBB and BA.2.75 sub-lineages emerging (which we will cover in another article), we are more concerned about the new BA.5 sub-lineages as we believe that they are more problematic and more pathogenic this time round and also could manifest immunity imprinting for those previosly infected or were vaccinated or boostered! Many of these warnings we have covered in our previous
COVID-19 News coverages.
