Medical News: A Promising Solution for Post-COVID Vascular Problems
COVID-19 may have started as a respiratory illness, but it quickly became clear it affects almost every part of the body—especially the blood vessels. Even after recovering from mild-to-moderate infections, many people continue to experience hidden damage to their vascular system. Now, a new clinical trial offers hope. Researchers from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece and the GlycoCalyx Research Institute in Utah, USA, have shown that a special glycocalyx supplement can significantly boost vascular health after COVID-19 infection.
Glycocalyx Supplement Containing Glucosamine Sulfate and Fucoidan Boosts Vascular Health After COVID-19
In this
Medical News report, the supplement under investigation, called Endocalyx-Pro™, contains glucosamine sulfate and fucoidan—natural ingredients known for their protective effects on blood vessel linings. Their study reveals that using this supplement for four months led to major improvements in vascular function, reduced oxidative stress, and even helped in alleviating lingering post-COVID symptoms.
Understanding the Glycocalyx and Why It Matters
The glycocalyx is a delicate, gel-like layer that coats the inside of blood vessels. It acts like a protective shield, keeping blood cells from directly touching the vessel walls. However, during COVID-19 infection, this layer gets damaged, leading to problems like blood clotting, inflammation, and long-term heart issues.
The study involved 57 patients who had recovered from mild-to-moderate COVID-19 and were not hospitalized. They were randomly assigned to take either the glycocalyx supplement or a placebo for four months. Throughout the study, researchers measured the integrity of the glycocalyx, arterial stiffness, coronary blood flow, and oxidative stress markers in the blood.
Key Findings from the Study
The results were very encouraging. Patients who took the glycocalyx supplement showed:
-A 6.8% reduction in the Perfused Boundary Region (PBR) of sublingual microvessels, meaning a healthier and thicker glycocalyx layer, compared to only a 1.3% reduction in the placebo group.
-A 13.2% decrease in pulse wave velocity, a key marker of arterial stiffness, compared to just 3% in the placebo group.
-A 28.5% drop in the augmentation index, another measure of blood vessel health, while the placebo group showed minimal change.
-A 12.9% increase in coronary flow reserve, indicating improved heart microcirculation, compared to only 1.6% in those who received a placebo.
-A 26% reduction in malondialdehyde and a 31.3% reduction in protein carbonyls, both indicators of oxidative stress, showing the supplement’s strong antioxidant effect.
Most notably, none of the patients taking the supplement reported lingering post-COVID sy
mptoms at four months, whereas 21.4% of those in the placebo group continued to experience fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain.
How the Supplement Works
Endocalyx-Pro™ delivers essential building blocks like glucosamine sulfate and fucoidan, which help rebuild and strengthen the glycocalyx layer. It also includes hyaluronic acid and powerful antioxidants from olive and grape extracts. By restoring the glycocalyx, the supplement reduces oxidative stress, improves blood flow, and protects the heart and vessels from further damage.
Fucoidan, in particular, was highlighted for its ability to mimic natural glycocalyx components, helping to rebuild the protective barrier and reduce harmful inflammation through pathways like the nuclear factor-kappa B signaling system.
Broader Implications for Long COVID and Vascular Health
The study suggests that preserving and restoring the glycocalyx could be a new therapeutic approach not just for COVID-19 recovery, but also for other chronic conditions linked to vascular damage, such as diabetes and aging. Improving endothelial function early after COVID-19 might prevent long-term cardiovascular complications, a growing concern even for people who had only mild infections.
A Clear Step Forward
The findings from this research provide a hopeful message: simple, natural supplements could play a significant role in healing hidden damage from COVID-19. Protecting the glycocalyx may become a cornerstone of post-infection care, helping patients regain full vascular health and avoid future heart problems.
The study findings were published in the peer-reviewed European Journal of Clinical Investigation.
