Hospital in Ubon Ratchathani Province in Thailand Set Ablaze by Airport Worker
Hospital personnel worked swiftly to evacuate patients from the 437-bed medical facility as fire trucks arrived on the scene. By approximately 5:30 PM, the Ubon Ratchathani municipal office confirmed that firefighters had managed to bring the flames under control. At the time, no injuries or casualties had been reported, but authorities were still assessing the extent of the damage. The exact cause of the fire was initially unknown, but an investigation was launched immediately.
Shocking Revelation Behind the Fire
As officials examined the incident further, they uncovered a shocking truth - the fire was not an accident but an act of arson. This
Thailand Hospital News report reveals that a 40-year-old Thai man, later identified as Phibul Rachathammasakul, was responsible for the attack. Phibul, who worked as a baggage handler at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, had allegedly thrown a Molotov cocktail inside the hospital’s inpatient building, deliberately setting it ablaze.
CCTV footage captured the suspect entering the hospital and making his way to the third floor. In the footage, he can be seen carrying a bottle, lighting it, and hurling it into the building. Witnesses reported that after setting the fire, he even fired a gun at hospital staff who attempted to put out the flames. Fortunately, the bullet missed, preventing what could have been a tragic escalation of the attack.
Dramatic Escape and Arrest
After causing chaos at the hospital, Phibul fled the scene in a rental car. On his escape route, he recklessly drove through traffic, colliding with a hospital staff member and two motorcycles, injuring three riders and passengers. His reckless attempt to escape took an even more shocking turn when he abandoned his vehicle and attempted to use a 10-year-old boy as a human shield to evade capture.
Despite his desperate measures, authorities tracked him down and arrested him in Na Yia district. During interrogation, Phibul confessed to the crime, stating that he had set the hospital on fire due to frustration over being deceived in a land purchase deal. He insisted that he bore no personal grievances against anyone at the hospital and that his actions were purely out of stress and frustration.
Criminal Charges and Investigation
Following his arrest, police charged Phibul with multiple serious offenses, including attempted murder, arson at a government facility, and illegal possession of a firearm. Law enforcement officials have
confirmed that further investigations are underway and that additional charges may be filed against him in the coming days. The authorities are also examining his background to determine if he had any prior history of violent behavior or criminal activity.
Conclusion
The shocking incident at Detudom Hospital has left the community in disbelief. While the swift response from hospital staff and firefighters prevented any loss of life, the attack highlights the unpredictable nature of violent crimes and the dangers posed by individuals dealing with extreme emotional distress. This article also raises concerns about security in public institutions, particularly hospitals, which should be safe havens for those seeking medical care. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to ensure that justice is served, and measures are put in place to prevent such incidents in the future.
