Italy coronavirus situation is fast expanding to other areas with cases now detected even in Piedmont and Puglia regions.
Meanwhile, health authorities reported that a second person in
Italy has died from complications from the new
coronavirus, Italian news agency ANSA said on Saturday.
The sudden death of a woman in the northern region of Lombardy follows that of a 78-year-old man who died on Friday. The new wave of
coronavirus cases in
Italy's northern regions has triggered shut-downs of shops, offices and community centers.
17 more confirmed
coronavirus cases were reported today bring the total infected in the country to 39 but more than 782 suspected cases are being investigated and tested.
As of Saturday morning in
Italy, the total number of towns that are under shutdown are now 15. Most of the towns are in Lombardy and Veneto regions with one new town in Piedmont.
Codogno in Lombardy was the first town to be lock downed
Italy.
Codogno Mayor Francesco Passerini issued a decree on Friday ordering the immediate closure of schools, municipal offices, and stores selling food, bars, discos, and sports facilities. All movements of residents was also controlled.
About 80 venues will be affected. The order could last between five days or more.
Local authorities have advised residents to stay at home and avoid social activities as a precaution.
Discovery of the
coronavirus cases "has created a situation of alarm throughout the municipality," Passerini said.
It has not been confirmed by health authorities how transmission of the
coronavirus occurred, however it appears from initial reports to be the first human-to-human transmission of the virus in
Italy.
The man in intensive care dined earlier this month with another man who had visited China in January. He exhibited flu-like symptoms at the time of the dinner, but has since tested negative for the virus, media reports said.
The pregnant wife of the man in intensive care and a friend of his with whom he played sports are the other two confirmed coronavirus cases in
Italy.
Around 782 people are now reportedly being tested for the
coronavirus in the area, according to Italian media reports but
some of the new cases have appeared in newer regions, causing a concern for the government.
