Thailand Hospital News: Minister of Public Health Launches Free Cancer Screening Initiative
On July 19, 2024, at Maha Vajiralongkorn Thanyaburi Hospital in Pathum Thani, Minister of Public Health Somsak Thepsuthin inaugurated a significant event celebrating the hospital's 23rd anniversary of providing free cancer screening and heath care to the poor. This initiative aims to honor the benevolence of King Rama X towards cancer patients and their families, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of His Majesty's 72nd birthday on July 28, 2024. As part of the celebrations, the hospital will offer free cancer screenings to 570 underprivileged individuals, covering 720 procedures in total, as a royal merit.

Maha Vajiralongkorn Thanyaburi Hospital

A Legacy of Compassion and Care
Originally known as "Thanyaburi Cancer Convalescent Home," the hospital was established to provide care for cancer patients referred from other hospitals. It was later renamed "Thanyaburi Cancer Patient Center." King Rama X, during his tenure as Crown Prince, recognized the plight of cancer patients and initiated the establishment of a comprehensive cancer treatment and rehabilitation center.

This included palliative care for terminally ill patients and support for their families. As covered in past Thailand Hospital News coverages, on July 20, 2001, the “Kanchanabaramee Building” was inaugurated, marking a significant milestone in the hospital's history. The hospital was officially named Maha Vajiralongkorn Thanyaburi Hospital on July 11, 2012.

Expanding Services and Capabilities
In his speech, Minister Somsak emphasized the hospital's commitment to evolving into a leading cancer hospital of the next decade. Cancer remains a critical public health issue worldwide, causing premature deaths and immense suffering, with high treatment costs. The hospital's anniversary project aligns with the Ministry of Public Health's policy of ensuring accessible, seamless healthcare services. The initiative aims to provide free cancer screenings to underprivileged and disadvantaged individuals, thereby reducing the reliance on foreign technology and optimizing resource utilization. The event also marked the opening of a new chemotherapy center on the 5th floor of the Kanchanabaramee Building, enhancing the hospital's capacity to serve more cancer patients.

State-of-the-Art Cancer Treatment
Dr. Amphon Benjapolpitak, Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, highlighted the hospital's specialization in cancer treatment under the Ministry of Public Health. Located between Khlong 10 and 11 on Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road in Thanyaburi District, Pathum Thani, the hospital covers 93 rai and serves eight provinces in Health Zone 4, including Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Saraburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Nakhon Nayok, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, and Lop Buri. It offers comprehensive cancer care using advanced technologies and equipment, particularly in radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, nuclear medicine, and palliative care. The hospital's specialized medical staff focus on improving patients' quality of life by alleviating physical and mental suffering and providing accommodations to reduce the financial burden on patients and their families.

A Commitment to Community Health
The 23rd-anniversary celebration at Maha Vajiralongkorn Thanyaburi Hospital underscores the hospital's ongoing dedication to providing accessible and compassionate cancer care. By offering free screenings and expanding its services, the hospital continues to honor King Rama X's legacy of compassion and care, ensuring that even the most vulnerable populations receive the necessary support and treatment.
