Medical News: In the last 36 hours, ever since a few unreliable X (previously Twitter) accounts covering stories about SARS-CoV-2 run by Colombians, Indians, Pakistanis, Turkish, Taiwanese and British individuals made claims that China has declared a National Emergency as a result of rising respiratory infections and that hospitals and crematoriums are overflowing, many online media are also erroneously running similar stories.

In reality after checking with various Chinese agencies, no Chinese official entity has declared such an Emergency!

Are Overflowing! Is It True? Image from old stockshots dated 2020
Yes, due to the cooler season, China is facing a surge in respiratory infections just like many other countries around the world. (In fact, Germany and the United Kingdom is also facing a massive surge in respiratory infections at the moment and hospitals there are also overwhelmed) and yes, hospitals are starting to see an increase of patients but the situation is unlike pictures and videos that are being shared online which are actually doctored past coverages taken in the years 2020 and 2021.
Yes, death rates are increasing among the old and vulnerable groups in China especially due to HMPV infections but crematoriums are definitely not overflowing yet!
China’s CDC has warned individuals to take precautions as a result of rising respiratory infections.
Thailand
Medical News learnt from its own lessons in 2022 when it did not get check sources and made a mistake about reporting on a COVID-19 situation in a certain South-East Asian country. It is always best to ask recognized officials or agencies and to officially quote them, and to also check with doctors at hospitals or with researchers etc
However, what is unique and concerning in China at the moment is that HMPV infections are rising at an exponential rate.

Preliminary research has revealed that new HMPV lineages from the A2 subtype has emerged but at this stage there is no data to support as to whether or not these new lineages are more transmissible or more virulent and pathogenic.

However local doctors are claiming that these new HMPV lineages could be driving disease severity and could be more neurotrophic based on the fact that there seems to be a rise of HMPV infections where encephalitis is also being seen along with a variety of neurological symptoms.
There is still a lot unknown about HMPV and the infections it causes, and also about the long-term health issues that it can cause.

Medical News has created a new resource section on HMPV where we are exploring all past studies and research.

There is currently no antivirals or vaccines for HMPV infections.
It is believed by some that these new HMPV lineages could be a global health threat and that the new lineages are already spreading to various geolocations across the world. It is also being speculated that the recent deaths with regards to a mysterious disease outbreak in Kwango, Democratic of Congo could have been caused by these same HMPV lineages. Test for HMPV were never done when checking as to what was causing deaths there.
