Russia Reports A 14.7 Percent Increase In COVID-19 Infections
In The Last Week With KP Variants Driving New Surge
"The incidence rate of new coronavirus infection over the past week per 100 thousand population was 8.1 and increased by 14.7% compared to the previous week. An increase in incidence was noted in 53 constituent entities of the Russian Federation, including in 21 regions more than the national average," the agency reported to various
COVID-19 News outlets.
Rising Death Toll
The rise in infections has also been accompanied by an increase in fatalities. Over the past week, 54 people succumbed to the virus. This is a slight increase from the previous week, where 49 deaths were reported. The recent surge follows a period from May 6 to May 12, during which the incidence of COVID-19 had decreased by 0.7%.
Increase in Hospitalizations
Hospitalizations have also seen a significant rise. During the week from May 13 to May 19, 2,469 patients with COVID-19 were hospitalized, a 34.6% increase from the week before. The operational headquarters noted that the increase in hospitalizations was observed in 55 regions, with 31 regions experiencing a rise that exceeded the national average.
Moscow's Situation
Moscow, the capital city, has been particularly affected. From May 13 to May 19, the city reported 1,915 new cases of coronavirus infection, a sharp 54% increase from the previous week’s 1,243 cases. Over the same period, 204 people were hospitalized in Moscow, and six patients died.

Emergence of New FLiRT Variant
In addition to the rising case numbers, a new variant of the coronavirus, known as FLiRT, has been identified in Russia. However, authorities have stated that this variant does not pose a significant danger. According to Rospotrebnadzor, the country's consumer rights and human well-being watchdog, the omicron variant remains the dominant strain.
"The ongoing monitoring makes it possible to identify even single new gene variants. During the entire monitoring period, 178 cases of new FLiRT variants were identified, including variants KP.2 (three cases), KP.1.1 (five cases), KS.1 (170 cases). All of them do not pose a greater danger than its other varieties," the ministry explained.

Predicted Increase After Holidays
Rospotrebnadzor attributed the recent increase in COVID-19 cases to heightened social interactions during the holidays. This trend had been anticipated, as people tend to gather more frequently during festive periods, leading to higher transmission rates.
Preventive Measures Advised
In light of the rising cases, experts have urged the public to adhere to preventive measures. These include frequent hand washing, ventilating rooms, disinfecting work surfaces and gadgets, and avoiding contact with individuals showing signs of illness.
Global Trends and Concerns
On a global scale, the new KP.2 variant of the FLiRT lineage has been on the rise, according to the GISAID international database. Preliminary forecasts suggest that KP.2 could potentially become the dominant variant worldwide. Despite this, the omicron variant continues to be the prevalent strain both in Russia and internationally.
Another new variant however could displace the KP.2 variant..the newly emerged KP.3 variant which is described as a FluQE variant due to the mutations found on it, along with many of its spawns are gathering pace and seems to be even more transmissible and immune evasive with a high growth advantage.

Conclusion
The recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Russia highlights the persistent threat of the virus and the importance of continued vigilance. With the identification of new variants and the increase in hospitalizations and fatalities, it is crucial for individuals to follow health guidelines and for authorities to monitor and respond to the evolving situation.
