South Korea Coronavirus crisis escalates as Samsung Electronics announced on Saturday that
coronavirus cases had been confirmed at its mobile device factory complex in the southeastern city of Gumi, causing a shutdown of its entire facility.
“The company has placed colleagues who came in contact with the infected employee in self-quarantine and taken steps to have them tested for possible infection,” Samsung said in a news release.
Meanwhile,
South Korea authorities announced 4 more deaths from the
coronavirus and 128 new cases bring the total deaths to 6, confirmed infected cases to 562, and those in severe critical condition as 14. More than 53,210 suspected cases are being observed or investigated for possible
coronavirus infections and are having diagnostic testing done.
Coronavirus cases have skyrocketed here in the past few days, seeing a tenfold increase from 51 on Wednesday to 562 as of 9 a.m. Sunday, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Out of the 562 confirmed
coronavirus infections, 306 cases were traced to the Daegu branch of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and 111 cases were linked to the Daenam hospital in Cheongdo.
Of 129 new cases confirmed Sunday morning, 75 cases were tied to the church, with 69 of them being Daegu residents. Seven people are from North Gyeongsang Province, two from Gyeonggi Province, and one each from Busan, Gwangju and South Gyeongsang Province.
South Korea Health authorities are checking the health status of 9,336 members of the religious group, with the members being placed in self-isolation. More than 1,200 people reportedly said they had suspicious symptoms and could have contracted the
coronavirus.
In a public message on Saturday night,
South Korea Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun apologized for the recent spike in
coronavirus infections and reassured people that the virus could be contained if the public cooperates with the government’s instruct
ions.
He asked people to refrain from attending mass gatherings, including rallies and religious services, to prevent the spread of the
coronavirus in
South Korea.
Even with the surge in the number of infections here, the government said it would not raise the four-tier virus alert level from the current “orange level” to the most serious “red level,” as the
coronavirus is spreading only in restricted areas.
