South Korea has declared the southeastern cities of Daegu and Cheongdo as "special care zones" on Friday as a cluster of coronavirus cases have been reported there in recent days with the number of suspected cases that are being observed all over Korea now coming to almost 8,415. Most are being tested or awaiting test results or are quarantined.

The total number of confirmed cases is now 156 and on Thursday, the country confirmed its first death of a COVID-19 patient in the southeastern city of Cheongdo.

Worries about community spread have mounted as new cases of coronavirus surged this week in Daegu, South Korea’s fourth-largest city and home to 2.5 million people, and its surrounding North Gyeongsang Province which has another 2.2 million people.

Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said at the start of a pan-government meeting over the coronavirus, "The government will take special measures by declaring the Daegu and Cheongdo areas, where a sudden rise in confirmed cases were reported, as special care zones."

Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun  said the government will focus on preventing the coronavirus from spreading locally."The government will mobilize all resources to overcome the virus," he added.

South Korea reported 52 new cases of the new coronavirus Friday, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 156, with the potentially fatal illness spreading fast across the country.

The total number of SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus infections here has almost tripled in just three days, with most new infections traced to church services in the southeastern city of Daegu.

Of the 52 new cases, 41 are in Daegu, 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, and the neighboring North Gyeongsang Province.
Another three were reported in Seoul, the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said in a statement.

The increase of coronavirus  infections in Daegu and several cases in Seoul, where routes of infections are not immediately traceable, have prompted health officials to declare that SARS-Cov-2  has begun spreading locally.

The Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said two new cases were reported in South Gyeongsang Province. In a sign that the coronavirus may broadly spread nationwide, six provinces, including Gyeonggi, Jeju, Chungcheong and North Jolla, each reported one case.

KCDC Director Jung Eun-kyeong told reporters on Thursday that the agency is uncertain whether the woman from Daegu, known as the 31st patient, was a "super spreader" of the virus but asked 1,001 members of the church to sel f-isolate to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Airasia has also announced the cancellation of certain flights to South Korea, travellers are advised to check their websites for details.
