Stop Calling Mpox Clade 2b Mild,  Young Argentinian Man Dies from So-Called 'Mild' Strain

His story challenges the ongoing perception that Mpox Clade 2b is a mild strain and highlights the dangers it can still pose, especially to individuals with underlying health conditions.

In November 2023, Thailand also reported the death of a young male from Mpox involving the cade 2b strain.

In fact, the total number of individuals who have died from the Mpox clade 2b strain since July 2022 has been staggering but yet we have so called ignorant health official and even doctors stupidly calling the Mpox Clade 2 variants as mild. Interestingly, there has been no Mpox News coverages about deaths from the Mpox clade 2b strain in most mainstream media despite so many such occurrences.

Mpox Claims Another Life in Argentina
The death of Santiago Molina was reported by a local Argentinian media, has caused a wave of concern. Santiago, who had been living in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico, with one of his sisters for over a year, was diagnosed with Mpox in early July. His battle against the disease became increasingly difficult, leading to his hospitalization at the General Hospital of Playa del Carmen on August 23.

Despite being admitted to intensive care, Santiago’s condition rapidly deteriorated. According to his aunt Eugenia, he suffered a lung collapse after a bronchoaspiration procedure, which led to his intubation. Sadly, his body could not withstand the ordeal, and he passed away a week later.

The Severity of Mpox in Immunocompromised Patients
Santiago’s case serves as a reminder of how dangerous Mpox can be, particularly for immunocompromised individuals. Santiago had been living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), a factor that likely contributed to the severity of his Mpox infection. His symptoms, which began two months before his death, became progressively worse in the last 20 days of his life. His family noted that his overall health took a sharp decline during this period.

The tragi c loss of Santiago sheds light on the heightened risks that people living with compromised immune systems, including those with HIV, face when contracting Mpox. While many in the public view the disease as mild, Santiago's case highlights that the Clade 2b strain, often considered less severe, can still have deadly consequences under certain conditions.

The Misconception of Clade 2b's Mildness
The widespread belief that the Clade 2b strain of Mpox is mild has led to a level of complacency among some healthcare providers and the general public. However, Santiago’s case challenges this misconception. Mpox, in all its forms, is still a viral disease that can cause severe complications, particularly in those who are immunocompromised or have pre-existing health conditions.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that categorizing viral strains as “mild” can create a false sense of security. Health experts are calling for greater awareness and caution, especially for vulnerable populations, as the risk of severe outcomes remains significant.

Mpox Continues to Be a Global Concern
Santiago's family, devastated by his sudden death, has made it their mission to raise awareness about the risks of Mpox, even from the so-called "mild" Clade 2b strain. His remains have been cremated, and his family plans to repatriate his ashes to Córdoba, Argentina, where he will be laid to rest.

Mpox continues to be a global health concern, despite vaccines and treatments being available in many regions. Santiago’s death is a reminder that while some cases may appear mild, the virus can still pose a significant threat, especially to those with underlying conditions.

Conclusion: A Call for Vigilance
The death of Santiago Molina should serve as a wake-up call to the global health community. It underscores the need to stop underestimating the potential dangers of Mpox, particularly in vulnerable individuals. Clade 2b may not be as deadly for the general population, but for those with weakened immune systems, the consequences can be fatal.

This tragedy serves as a reminder that continuous vigilance, preventive care, and prompt medical attention are necessary to combat the ongoing Mpox outbreaks. The misperception of mildness associated with some strains of the virus should not detract from the seriousness with which it is approached in medical settings.
