COVID-19 News: A study conducted by researchers from the University of Zimbabwe has shown that early vitamin C treatment reduces the risk of mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
The retrospective study involving 672 COVID-19 hospitalized patients showed that early vitamin C treatment was associated with a 52% reduction of mortality risk.
The study basically focused on factors that increased mortality risk in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
According to the study team, approximately 15% of COVID-19 patients developed symptoms necessitating admission. From 2020 to 2022, Mashonaland West Province in Zimbabwe had an institutional case fatality rate of 23% against a national rate of 7%. Therefore, the study team decided to evaluate the COVID-19 admissions in the province to determine the factors associated with COVID-19 mortality.
The study conducted an analytical cross-sectional study based on secondary data from isolation centers across the province using death audit forms and patient records of about 672 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The study team obtained data on patient demographics, signs and symptoms, clinical management and oxygen therapy administered, among other things. Data were entered into an electronic form and imported into Epi-info 7 for analysis bivariate and multivariate was conducted.
The study findings showed that being an older man, aOR 1.04 (1.03-1.05), who had diabetes aOR 6.0 (95% CI: 3.8-9.2) and hypertension aOR 4.5 (95% CI: 2.8-6.5) were independent risk factors. Patients put on dexamethasone aOR 2.4 (95% CI: 1.6-3.4) and heparin/clexane aOR 1.6 (95% CI: 1.1-2.2) had a higher mortality risk.
Interestingly however, vitamin C aOR 0.48 (95% CI: 0.31-0.71) and oxygen therapy aOR 0.14 (95% CI: 0.10-0.19) and being pregnant aOR 0.06 (95% CI: 0.02-0.14) were protective.
The study team concluded that COVID-19 mortality risk increased in older male patients with comorbidities and with those on dexamethasone and heparin therapy.
However, the study findings clearly showed that oxygen therapy and vitamin C were protective.
The study team said that there was a need to conduct further study of the source of these variations in risk across patients to establish the true impact of differences in individuals' mortality.
The study findings were published in the peer reviewed Pan African Medical Journal

Numerous other studies have also shown that incorporating vitamin C in daily supplements regimens or in diets also helped with dealing with COVID-19 infections in terms of preventing disease severity and faster recovery.

Most recently, a study review indicated that early vitamin C usage was associated with prevention of COVID-19 disease severity because vitamin C not only exhibited antiviral properties but it was also was capable of preventing SARS-CoV-2 induced cytokine storms.

More studies are warranted as to how vitamin C can be incorporated as an adjuvant or even prophylactic agent in various protocols dealing with COVID-19.
It should be noted that earlier in the pandemic, many physicians, “experts’, bastard fact-checkers employed by mainstream media and social media platforms such as Facebook were quick to dismiss that vitamin C could help in COVID-19 infections and were dismissing any reports about benefits of using vitamin C as adjuvants in COVID-19 treatments as fake news. We truly suggest that people who have lost loved ones due to COVID-19 to find ways to take legal actions against such individuals or entities.
It should be also be noted that the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases in America also dismisses the benefits of Vitamin C as adjuvants in COVID-19 treatment protocols.
