COVID-19 News: The COVID-19 epidemic is once again on the rise in Taiwan. According to the Taiwanese Department of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 328 new confirmed local COVID-19 cases last week (June 4-10), marking a significant increase from the 263 cases reported the previous week (May 28-June 3). The majority of these cases, 79%, were among elderly individuals over 65 years old. The Taiwanese CDC has also reported 20 new deaths last week, slightly down from 26 the previous week. Among the cumulative deaths, elderly people over 65 years old account for 90%.

Taiwan Faces Rising COVID-19 Cases With 328 New Cases
And 20 Deaths Reported For Last Week.

Vaccination Progress and Call to Action
To date, Taiwan has administered 2.764 million doses of the COVID-19 XBB vaccine, achieving a national vaccination rate of 11.36%. For the elderly population over 65 years old, the vaccination rates for the first and second doses are 20.54% and 1.55%, respectively. Currently, Taiwan has approximately 2.889 million doses of the Moderna XBB vaccine and 48,000 doses of the Novavax XBB vaccine in stock.

Given the ongoing threat of the epidemic, the Taiwanese CDC urges those who have not yet received the COVID-19 XBB vaccine to get vaccinated promptly. The CDC stresses that vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19.

Monitoring Mutant Strains
The CDC's monitoring data over the past four weeks indicates that the most commonly detected mutant strains locally and overseas are JN.1, accounting for 64% and 59%, respectively.

Although these strains have been declining, the proportions of other strains, KP.2 and KP.3, have seen slight increases. The CDC continues to closely monitor the prevalence trends of these mutant strains.

Recommendations for the Public
With the risk of epidemic transmission still present, the Taiwanese CDC reminds the public to remain vigilant. The Taiwanese health authorities have been empathizing only about the vaccines in all its COVID-19 News coverages although there is no concrete evidence if these current COVID-19 vaccines will offer any protection against then newer KP.2 and KP.2 sub-lineages and their spawns.

If one experiences fever or suspected COVID-19 symptoms such as cough, runny nose, or sore throat, it is crucial to use a COVID-19 home rapid screening test. When seeking medical treatment, inform the doctor of your rapid screening results to ensure proper care.

Vaccination remains a critical measure in the fight against COV ID-19. The CDC recommends that everyone over six months old should get vaccinated as soon as possible. For those over 65 years old or individuals with immune deficiencies, it is especially important to receive the vaccine. High-risk groups, including the elderly over 65 years old, indigenous people aged 55-64 years old, and individuals over six months old with immune deficiencies, are advised to get a second dose 12 weeks (84 days) after the first to enhance protection.

Conclusion
As Taiwan navigates this challenging period of rising COVID-19 cases, the CDC's message is clear: stay vigilant, get vaccinated, and use rapid screening tests if symptoms arise. By following these guidelines, the public can help mitigate the impact of the epidemic and protect the most vulnerable populations.
Stay informed and take proactive steps to safeguard your health and the health of those around you. The fight against COVID-19 continues, and together, we can make a difference.
