Thailand Medical authorities have stopped reporting on the total number of weekly COVID-19 infections found, the number of COVID-19 test conducted nor do they report about the COVID-19 test positivity rates. Hence no one has any clue as to the actual spread of the SARS-CoV-2 withing the various communities and the general population. This is worrisome especially when we consider that exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus can cause long term medical issues not just Long COVID.
Until a few weeks ago, they were also reporting about the numbers needing ICU care and the patients needing mechanical ventilation but they have since stopped even reporting on that. This is perhaps an attempt to conceal the type of disease severity that the current circulating variants are causing.
There is even no genomic surveillance report as to what current SARS-CoV-2 variants are circulating in the country.
Of course, we occasionally have the either one of the usual three Thai ‘experts’ that are dying to be on the media, regurgitating some details based on whatever they could make up from data they have read elsewhere!
Many local healthcare professionals are asking the authorities for purposes of transparency to disclose and list the hospitals and regions and the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations found so as to validate these figures which are raising suspicions of inaccuracy. Some are speculating and asking if there is an attempt to conceal the actual COVID-19 situation merely for economic purposes and also to protect the tourism industry.
