U.S. Medical News: Nevada, like much of the United States, is witnessing a significant rise in COVID-19 cases, with Carson City and Clark County being particularly affected. This surge comes as President Joe Biden, who recently contracted the virus, had to cancel events and leave Las Vegas. This U.S. Medical News report delves into the current situation in Nevada, the contributing factors, and the measures being recommended to curb the spread of the virus.

U.S. Medical News - Nevada Sees Rising COVID-19 Cases With Carson City And
Clark County Most Affected

Increasing COVID-19 Cases
Nevada is currently experiencing a daily average of 125 new COVID-19 infections, translating to 103 cases per 100,000 people. Emergency Department (ED) visits related to COVID-19 have surged by 14.4%, with Carson City reporting a high number of such visits.

Dave Sheehan, a public information officer at the Southern Nevada Health District reported that that Clark County has observed an increase in cases through wastewater surveillance.

Factors Contributing to the Surge
Sheehan told reporters that the spike in cases is partly due to new variants circulating, summer heat driving people indoors, and poor ventilation in many indoor spaces. These factors create environments where people are in close contact, often unmasked, exacerbating the spread of the virus.

The Southern Nevada Health District urges residents to avoid poorly ventilated areas, and maintain good hygiene practices.

Emergence of New Variants
Since winter, new COVID-19 strains have emerged, with California and Arizona reporting increases ahead of Nevada. These subvariants, known as KP.2, KP.3, and KP.1.1, belong to the FLiRT group, named after the technical names for the group’s mutations, as noted by Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health. Wastewater surveillance continues to serve as an early warning system for health officials, with recent CDC data indicating an upswing in cases.

In Clark county, the LB.1 variant seems to be gaining a foothold.

The Situation in Clark County
In Clark County, case rates have been rising for 13 consecutive weeks since mi d-April. The latest data shows a 25% increase in case rates from the previous week, with the 14-day running average of new daily cases jumping from 65 to 81. Statewide, the case rate has increased from 100 to 125 over the past week. These numbers are updated weekly on the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services dashboard.

Emergency Department Visits and Overall Impact
The percentage of ED visits diagnosed as COVID-19 has also seen a steady increase, currently at 1.2%, up from 0.2% in mid-April. While these numbers are slightly higher than those recorded in early 2023, they reflect a concerning trend. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists 20 conditions that increase COVID-19 risk, along with disabilities associated with higher risk. To date, 228 deaths in Nevada this year have been attributed to COVID-19, with the virus having claimed over 12,000 lives in the state since the pandemic began in 2020.

Ongoing Risks and Protective Measures
Despite the end of the official health emergency, COVID-19 remains a significant threat, particularly to older individuals and those with respiratory conditions. While some people have continued to wear masks, the current surge has reignited discussions about the necessity of masking and other protective measures. The CDC advises staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccines, practicing good hygiene, and improving indoor air quality as key steps to prevent infection.

President Biden's COVID-19 Diagnosis
President Biden's recent COVID-19 diagnosis, with mild symptoms including general malaise, underscores the ongoing presence and risk of the virus. The White House indicated that Biden likely contracted the virus before arriving in Las Vegas. His case highlights the importance of vigilance, even as public attention to the pandemic has waned. It should be noted that President Biden has been vaccinated and received the COVID-19 boosters numerous times and yet has been infected with the virus on a few occasions.

Conclusion
The resurgence of COVID-19 in Nevada, particularly in Carson City and Clark County, is a reminder that the virus remains a formidable adversary. With new variants emerging and environmental factors contributing to the spread, it is crucial for residents to heed public health advice, stay informed, and take proactive measures to protect themselves and their communities. As Nevada navigates this latest wave, the lessons learned from the past few years will be essential in mitigating the impact of COVID-19 and safeguarding public health.
