Emerging data is showing that the SARS-CoV-2 BA.5 variant and its emerging sub-variants are able to utilize the TMPRSS2 more effectively than the even the previous Alpha or Delta variants and implies that we can expect more disease severity and increased mortality in those infected with this new variant and its sub-variants.

Already the BA.5 variant which is gaining a stronghold in Portugal is providing a sneak preview of what the rest of the world can expect to witness ie increased hospitalizations and increased deaths.

 

The B.5 and its emerging sub-variants are nothing like the earlier Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 variants that were not able to utilize the TMPRSS2 effectively due to lack of certain critical mutations including the L452R mutation.

Hence except for the vulnerable groups, the Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 variants and their sub-variants only caused asymptomatic or mild symptomatic conditions in early infections of most of the otherwise health population while it causes more serious long term health issues.

 

As a result of the BA.5 variant and its emerging sub-variants being able to utilize the TMPRSS2 more effectively, we can also expect increased cell fusogenicity and disease severity.

 

Other preliminary unpublished data that is emerging with regards to the BA.5 variants and its emerging sub-variants are that its has a different pathogenesis mode and also one of the ways that it ‘switches’ off the human host immune responses is via damaging the fc receptors, MHC Class 1 molecules, monocytes and also the various T Cells.

 

We can expect to be dealing with a new variant that is far worse than airborne HIV!

 

To add to more bad news, the emerging BA.5 variants and its emerging sub-variants are presenting lots of new mutations on its mPro and Nsp5 proteins which implies that whatever known antiviral compounds that we have known or used in the past that work by binding with these mPro proteins to inhibit viral replication will no longer work with the new BA.5 variant and its ub-variants.


The BA.5 variant and its emerging sub-variants are evasive to both natural immunity and vaccine-induced immunity and literally none of the existing monoclonal or polyclonal therapeutics works on them!


It should also be noted that the BA.5 variant replicates very effciently and rapidly in the human host lungs compared to previous variants.

We are in fact reverting to a situation that is far worse than when the original Wuhan wildtype strain had originally emerged!

For example, the BA.5 variant arose in South Africa where it did not really impact the local population upon initial infection. However in Portugal we are seeing the far more worse effects of the BA.5 variant and its emerging sub-variants on a population with a different genetic makeup.

 

In the same light, Thailand Medical News is forecasting that the emergence of the BA.2.12.1 and the BA.4 and BA.5 will be disastrous for South East Asia and East Asia this time while the Europe, South Asia, North and South America and the Oceania will be heavily impacted by the BA.5 and its emerging sub-variants.
