Thailand Medical news is issuing this warning that local Thais should not attempt to self-prescribe any drugs that are being currently being studied for drug repurposing to treat COVID-19.
Also all Thais should never take any herbs, TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicines), supplements and even over the counter drugs (OTCs) such as NSAIDs without consulting a local Thai doctor first.
Also always check that doctors are only using drugs or therapeutics that are approved by the Thai Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) to treat COVID-19.
While there are many drugs that are being studied and in some cases initial clinical trials might show that some of these drugs do have a certain degree of efficacy in treating certain conditions associated with COVID-19, a common layman should never attempt to use any of these drugs with consulting a local Thai doctor first.
We are hearing reports of individuals procuring the drug Ivermectin from online sites and in most cases are actually buying Ivermectin meant for veterinary use which is dangerous for humans to consume. (Unless off course you are what the Thais term as a “Kwai!”)
Individuals should also avoid using Ivermectin as latest data is showing that it is not effective in treating emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants such as the Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma variants. It was effective according to certain past studies with the initial wildtype strains that emerged from Wuhan but no longer in the current situation. Numerous countries that once adopted it in their treatment protocols such as India and Brazil, have since dropped the drug.
Thais should avoid adopting treatment protocols or products that are being flogged on social media platforms and instead depend on their ‘all knowing’ local doctors.
When in doubt about any medications or in need of any treatments always contact the Thai MOPH or Thai FDA and should you not be able to get through, go in person to their offices to seek help.
Thais should also focus on getting vaccinated with whatever vaccines that are available at the moment so that they do not develop disease severity as claimed by the WHO and also ‘experts’ from all over the world including so called Thai ‘Virologists.’
No matter what, the Thai government has promised that all locals (We cannot comment about the foreigners or expats here) will eventually get vaccinated and that the government and the Thai FDA has more than sufficient supplies of the teratogenic drug called a Favipiravir to treat COVID-19. (Although the US CDC in their studies have shown that the drug does not work to treat COVID-19 and countries like Canada and India have now not allowed the usage of the drug to treat COVID-19)

The MOPH also has more than enough stocks of the local Thai herb Fah Talai Jones (
Andrographis panniculata) to treat local COVID-19 cases. But please do not consume it without consulting a Thai doctor first.(We are also refraining from commenting about the usage of this herb to treat COVID-19)
It is also interesting to note that a new law is being proposed by the MOPH that will indemnify all Thai doctors, MOPH officials, health policy makers and some buffoons from any misdoings on their part while treating anyone for COVID-19 or their management of the COVID-19 crisis. Always ask and check what drugs are being given to you unless you are on the ventilator!
